PRESS RELEASE Wednesday 16th February, 2011 We’ve got the green light! Launch of Greenlight is a brand new program in the Northern suburbs of Hobart. Greenlight is a Learner Driver Mentor Program (LDMP) and is focussed on assisting disadvantaged learner drivers to gain their 50 hours of supervised driving with the aim of gaining their provisional licence. New licensing and legislation requires different stages of L's and 50 hours of driving experience before sitting for the provisional license. Obtaining a driver's license has become increasingly difficult for many disadvantaged Tasmanian's. There are a growing number of people in the community who cannot afford driving lessons or access to the support required to learn practical skills to drive a vehicle. This leaves them without the option of their own transport, restricting their ability to access employment, training or social opportunities, especially in areas where public transport is limited. We provide the vehicle (a brand new manual Mazda 3) and match learner drivers with mentor drivers, who work together to achieve the 50 supervised driving hours, with the aim of the learner driver obtaining their provisional licence. We hope to create opportunities for ongoing sustainability in supporting disadvantaged learner drivers to gain the essential skills, experience and benefits of holding a drivers license. Greenlight is funded by the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources. The Greenlight vehicle was purchased with funding from the Cars For Communities program, Department of Premier and Cabinet. Greenlight is a project of the Goodwood Community Centre and is also supported by West Moonah Community House and Bucaan Community Centre and other community organisations. Greenlight will be officially launched on Wednesday 16th February at 11am, at the Goodwood Community Centre. Scott Bacon MP will be representing Minister O’Byrne in officially launching the project.
